SAIFD In Session

Forbes Chapter Working Hard in Community and on Campus

The Forbes SAIFD Chapter at Kishwaukee College in Malta, Ill. had a great first semester. The students are working hard to raise money in order to attend AIFD’s 2007
Symposium. Recently the chapter held a pie and rose sale, baking 175 pies and setting up 83 dozen roses. Students have also spent some time in the community decorating the dining room at the historic Ellwood house in DeKalb. They also designed floral decor for several areas on campus. Chapter Advisor Janet Gallagher AIFD summed it up when she said, “It’s a great group!”

MacKenzie Chapter Uses Flower Power to Raise Profile on Illinois State Campus

This semester has been very successful for the SAIFD MacKenzie Chapter of Triton College in River Grove, Ill. In September the students attended and competed at the Illinois State Florists’ Association Conference. Eight students participated in the Table Top Design Competition and received four of the six awards. In the student division Joanne Motta took first place, Luz Cardenas took second place, and Stacey Bal took third place. In the retail division Ana Rovello received third place.

The on-campus involvement of the Chapter has increased since previous years. In October the students competed in a Triton College Club Organization Fair and received third place for their imaginative “Flower Power” themed table. In early November Secretary Tina Barreto and Vice President Stacey Bal taught a student workshop on how to make topiaries. The event was very successful and increased campus awareness of the Horticulture Department and SAIFD.

After attending Symposium this year the students were inspired to do their very own stage show. The concept Holiday Road Trip was created by Bal and took three and a half months of planning before it was brought to life. On November 19, 2006, the show took the audience on a “cross country journey” through various parts of the country and showcased their location-inspired holiday styles. The students and advisor Susan Bal AIFD, demonstrated unique floral creations suitable for weddings, parties, home decor, and much more! Proceeds will benefit the chapter and St. Judes Children’s Hospital.

SAIFD Mackenzie Chapter is not slowing down anytime soon, planning on participating in a campus Digital Scavenger Hunt and Clothing Drive. So far at least five students intend on competing at Symposium 2007.

Trillium Chapter Sets Up Shop; Raise Funds for 2007 Symposium

On December 7, 2006 our Seneca College SAIFD Trillium Chapter organized a Holiday Event, a Fundraiser for the students to participate in various competitions in 2007 including the SAIFD Design Competition during AIFD's Symposium in Palm Desert.

Leading up to the event students were involved in the planning stages as well as the preparation of several different holiday designs. Boxwood Trees, topiaries, candle centerpieces and Orchid Arrangements were among the favorites. The classroom was transformed into a large flower shop sales area with the help of fabric, lights and some props. Students were working in groups serving hot cider and sweets, selling holiday designs and accessories, packaging, payment transactions and selling more than 300 raffle tickets. As the doors opened at 11 a.m. that morning the spirits were high, business was brisk and the room was filled with energy. Everybody had a great time!

This was an other successful event for our chapter and certainly a tremendous learning experience for our students.
