Joliet Junior College Students Sweep AIFD Student Design Competition

BALTIMORE (July 2011) – Two Joliet Junior College students made their mark at the American Institute of Floral Designers' (AIFD) 2011 Student Floral Design Competition that was held as part of AIFD's 2011 National Symposium in San Francisco, July 4-9. The two students who were part of the college design team brought home a total of six awards.
Kathrynn Wahl and Elizabeth Cangiano tied for first place in the Overall Contest Winner category. The college, led by SAIFD advisor Donna Theimer AIFD, also earned the Overall School Award. The competition consists of five categories: Overall, Buffet/Food Table Design, Napkin Floral Décor, Flowers to Carry – Bridal Bouquet Design, and Sweetheart Table Design. In the Buffet Design category, Joliet Junior College student Elizabeth Cangiano took 1st place and Kathryn Wahl took 3rd place. Wahl also took 1st place in the Wedding Bouquet category and in the Centerpiece for Sweetheart Table Design category Cangiano took 2nd place.
Jamie Brunetti of City College of San Francisco took home the People's Choice Award. Monica Macaibay of the College of Southern Nevada garnered first place in the Sweetheart Table Design category and Kara Zuniga of Texas A&M University garnered first place in the Napkin Floral Décor category.
The schools that competed in the competition this year were: California Polytechnic, City College of San Francisco, College of San Mateo, College of Sequoias, College of Southern Nevada, Gateway Technical College, Golden West College, Joliet Junior College, Kishwaukee College, Mississippi State University, Ohio State University, Seneca College, SUNY Cobleskill, Texas A&M University and the University of Illinois.
Student AIFD (SAIFD) maintains chapters at 18 colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. SAIFD Chapters not only compete in the Annual Student Design Competition during AIFD's National Symposium but also host Artist in Residence Programs throughout the year. Chapter members also receive sponsorships to attend the National Symposium from AIFD members and Industry Partners through the AIFD Foundation.
